These online courses, combining Watercolour and ideas, grew out of teaching watercolour for many years at the Mary Ward Centre, an Adult Education Centre in London. Although the courses were loosely titled ‘Creative Watercolour’ I was free to develop and explore this in whatever ways I wanted which allowed the courses to grow and evolve into what they are today. I moved to teaching online and independently as a consequence of Covid 19 and the lockdown of Spring 2020.

The courses consist of 10 weekly Zoom meetings of 1.5 hours with groups of six. After the Zoom meet, you work on the weeks project at home and before the next zoom session send photographs of your work through to me either as an email attachment or through Wetransfer. I collate all the work into a presentation and then during the zoom session we go through each persons work discussing it as a group and then after a short break I talk you through the next weeks project.
At the end of the teaching day I send everyone a link to the handout with the following weeks project and a pdf of all of the groups work, including students from the other groups, of the previous week.

Currently there are two courses that I run online. They are both run on Zoom with occasional optional meet ups as an extra if students can be in London.

Introduction to Watercolour Processes

This is a ten week course introducing watercolour processes and visual language. It takes you through how to handle and engage with the fluidity of watercolour and the importance of observation and colour theory. It enables the requisite familiarity with the medium to allow students to join the ongoing ‘Ideas through Watercolour’ group.

I run this course on demand so please register your interest on the Contact page. To download the course outline, click on the image below.

Ideas through Watercolour - series
'
This is an ongoing course through which themes are explored using watercolour and drawing as a vehicle. The themes can be connected to visual art, or writing or music and are frequently oriented towards nature. Other methodologies are engaged such as photography, collage and writing. There is an emphasis on personal creative practice and growth.
Each course begins with a return to watercolour and the wonder of what it does, via a simple watercolour exercise. The second session explores a facet of colour theory. After this, the course theme is explored in a number of ways including:
-
The sensory experience of working with watercolour, engaging and interacting with its flow.
-
An aspect of colour theory.
-
Creative process exercises in drawing, for example drawing without looking at the paper.
-
Exploring the theme of the course either through a particular technique or through an idea.
-
A consideration of the work of other artists.
-
A personal project and presentation.
-
Discussion and interaction.
